What Is A Vasectomy?

A vasectomy is a procedure where the tube that carries sperm from the testicle to the penis is interrupted. In this procedure, the scrotum is numbed with a small amount of local anesthetic. The tube is then grasped and divided. It usually takes about 15 minutes and causes minimal discomfort. This is done in the office.

What Technique Do We Use?

We use a no needle, no scalpel technique. In this technique we have a device that delivers a mist of local anesthetic at a high speed into the scrotum (it feels about like getting hit with a rubber band). The skin is then split with a special tool and the procedure is performed through this opening.

The reason that this is important and an improvement over standard vasectomy technique is that it creates a smaller incision and decreases the risk of bleeding or infection.

Vasectomy Recovery Time

Recovery varies depending on the patient, but for most patients they can resume light activity 24 hours after the procedure. For the first day, they shouldn’t return to work. Avoid exercise including excessive walking. Patient shouldn’t have sex the day of the procedure.

For the seven days following the procedure patients shouldn’t participate in heavy exercise. They should not ride a bike or lift more than 40 lbs. No swimming, rough housing, or jumping.

Twelve weeks after the procedure it will be important to obtain a semen sample to ensure that there are no residual sperm. Patients may still be able to get a partner pregnant during this time period. It is important to have at least 12 ejaculations during this time to help clear the tubes of semen.

Vasectomy Side-Effects

Most people elect to pay the pre-paid cash price of $300. However, vasectomy is almost always covered by insurance. We are happy to try and get an insurance quote for this too. We will not turn patients away for inability to pay for this procedure.
